They Are Adding Up Gang

1)  Richardson – had to withdraw due to shenanigans in New Mexico

2) Geitner – tax evasion.

3) Dashle – even more and bigger tax evasion

4) The hiring of lobbyists ‘after’ saying their government was going to be lobbyist free.

But of course, it is all OK – one had better remember – elections have consequences.  And for those who would say, yes but, look where we were… I would say to you.  Umm, it will git better. <wink>

Renewable Energy

I took a road trip to Des Moines Iowa yesterday – this is the first time in a spell I have driven that in daylight hours.  In years past there has always been one or two large windmills along the way.  Today, if you see one, you will see at least one hundred.  It is an amazing sight.  The other day I saw one of the propellers on the back of a flatbed tractor trailer.  It took the entire length of that trailer and was hanging over the end.  This is indeed a whole new industry popping up; I sure hope they figure out how to ‘store’ the energy.  As I understand it to this point, the energy generated can obviously be used, but the excess is not storable.  I lost count about how many there were, but someone has been busy (and they were all a turning).

What “He” Said – What “He” Does

“He” said - “If you are a lobbyist entering my administration, you will not be able to work on matters you lobbied on, or in the agencies you lobbied during the previous two years.” “He” wants William Lynn (Raytheon lobbyist) to be assistant Secretary of Defense.  Now, “I” am pro defense; in fact “I” worked for Raytheon.  I don’t give a rat’s ptooie if Lynn is granted the position or not… I just want it to be said… if “He” is going to make these grand proclamations, please follow through, otherwise just do it and try not making us even more cynical about our government.

In my mind, we will now have a lobbyist as Assistant Secretary of Defense, and it looks like a crook (tax dodger) as Secretary of Treasury.  Interesting beginning… oh, but they are the ‘only’ qualified and we need them desperately.  Acck!  An insult to the American people to think they are the only ones qualified.

Your Government In Action

In response to a plea in our local paper I decided to swing by the local  library and volunteer for assisting in the Census of 2009.  I was not in the room five minutes when I wondered why I decided to do such a foolish thing.  My daughter had sent me a  link that told the requirements… the link also showed the application which one could fill out online, print out and be ‘ahead’ of the game.  I did this.

Upon arrival at the library, the first thing out of their mouth was I needed my social security card in order to prove who I was. This information / request was NOT in the article.   I had with me, my military I.D. card which includes my social security number.  I had a certified copy of my DD214 which is the document proving one has served in the military and which includes said social security number. I had with me a copy of my disability papers which has a unique number I used to buy / receive my first V.A. loan and which obviously has my social security number.  Nope, not good enough.  I nearly walked but decided to stick it out.

I took the test which had thirty minutes allocated.  I was admittedly surprised.  The test did make me think.  I took perhaps 28 of the 30 minutes and scored a 95%.  The instructor stated she would remain for one hour for those who lived close by and wanted to bring their social security cards back.  I did.  I also took a birth certificate.  When I arrived I laid them both down.  She wanted to put the birth certificate in ‘my’ folder.  I told her I only brought it along in case she thought my s.s. card was fake and she was NOT gonna keep my birth certificate. I told her just dealing with her was bringing back nightmares about government work.  She began to apologize and I just told her to save her breath. She mumbled about government paperwork and my response was… so  what are you doing about it.  I worked in the military and defense contracting for twenty years madam. I KNOW one can and should use common sense.  She did not impress me and it drives me nutso when people blame their government.  Somebody has to take a stand and do something.

And I want these yaybirds running my healthcare.  Ahhh, yes, gently bending over and preparing for insertion. And by the way.  I don’t give a rats ptooie if they call me or not.

That Homeless Feeling

So I’m on the road the other day – the mission… take a bus to Ames Iowa, from there a cab to Jewell Iowa to pick up a 2009 Malibu and take it to Wichita KS.  Things were going very smooth.  The bus was on time, the cabbie was there when I arrived, the car owner just left the keys in it along with the spare set and said “drive it away”.  So, off I went.  I headed out for Wichita and arrived with only one small incident.  I had stopped for gas and while the car was filling I went inside to relieve myself and buy a e large coffee.  Bought Columbian Brew with two creams.  Set that on top of the car as I finished with the pump and promptly forgot I’d put it there.  As I pulled away, I heard a ‘PLOP’.  I ‘did’ get out to see if perchance the lid had stayed on… it had not… I punished myself by driving a another120 miles before stopping for another shot at java.

So, with my trusty GPS to guide me, I delivered the Malibu at 5:30 PM and the recipient was so grateful for my early arrival he offered to drive me to the Wichita bus station.  My bus home was not scheduled to leave till 3 a.m. and I was prepared for the long wait in the bus station.  As we pulled into the bus station, it looked doggone dark…I got out to check and a fellow came to the door and said they were closed until 2 a.m.   I said what in the world am I supposed to do, and he pointed to a bench and said, “have a seat”.  Umm, it was chilly and I knew I couldn’t just sit out there for nearly ten hours.  Regardless I released the fellow who brought me and thanked him again for going out of his way to assist.

So, I walked across the street to a fast food joint and ate.  I noticed on the door going in the drive  through was open for 24 hours, but the joint’s lobby closed at midnight.  Hmm, could I last two hours in the cold… decided not to chance it, and wandered further down the road to a small motel.  Waltzed through the door trying to put on my best look and asked the clerk if I could sit in their lobby, promising not to bother anyone.  Oh no, you can not do… (she was, I think from India)… had the nice mark on her forehead and everything.  Said I could buy a room if I wanted… while I was carrying cash and credit cards, I was stubborn and said no.

Went further down the road to a Holiday Inn… told my story again, and the young black gentleman said I could sit in their lobby.  He said he would inform the others about my plight and there should be no problem.  Now, I had been up and on the go since 4 a.m. so when I sunk into that big leather chair and began watching the inauguration festivities I didn’t even care. I watched all the balls the first time, and was on the second go round when shift change occurred.  Problems began to form on the horizon.  The new nighttime clerk was a beady eyed overweight fellow and soon a big beefy guard appeared.  He wandered over to me and asked if I had a room.  I told him no, and evidently the previous shift had not explained my plight.  He said “we will have to ask you to leave then”… to which I began in earnest to defend my position.  I now only had three hours to go until the bus station reopened.  I looked as good as anyone who had been on the road all day could look, that is to say, my clothes were wrinkled, I could smell things, and I had my hoody off and laying beside me.  I had run my fingers through my hair so I did not have that unkempt look, but the fellow was adamant.  I leisurely pulled my wallet out and pulled two 50s out.  Asked him if he wanted me to pay to let me wait out my last three hours. I think he then got slightly embarrassed and said if the other crew had said I could stay, then so be it, but they would be given a talking to.  Me?  I didn’t care at that point. He had backed down and I was grateful.

The end of the story?  Naay.  At 1:30 a.m. I depart for the .5 mile walk to the bus station.  Arriving at 1:45 and feeling the chill, there was one other fellow standing there.  He had ear phones and was playing some video game, occasionally cursing the the mosheen.  From the back of the building comes a fellow wanting to bum a smoke.  Stating I did not smoke, the game playing fellow said he had one and he didn’t need the quarter offered for the smoke.  The receiver of said smoke said he’d just gotten outta jail and was gitting outta town.  I’m beginning to have an uneasy feeling but nothing more came of it… the door did not open until 2 a.m. on the  dot and in that short time I was doggone cold.  And I had been fortified earlier with McDogBalls burgers etc.

So, we finally get on the bus, departing on time at 3 a.m. – the driver makes an announcement that this was an express service direct to Kansas City.  Lights would be out for sleepers and to be courteous of your fellow travelers.  There were audible sighs of contentment, EXCEPT – a young mother with a 1-2 year old (sitting directly across from me) had boarded.  The youngun looked at me (before lights out) and winked he was gonna raise cain.  This had to be one of the most miserable three hours I have ever spent in my life.  Sleep?  Ha ha.  The mother had my sympathy… some on the bus were now making other audible sounds which will not be rewritten here.  There was a two hour layover in KC before I boarded for Omaha.  The mother fought him the whole time and had I seen her get in the Omaha line I swear I would have gone to the airport and flown.

So, I ‘did’ get the homeless feeling more than once on this trip.  I think I can say, it was not a good feeling.  You can believe this or not, but from the time I sunk into that chair in the Holiday Inn around 7:30 PM, I did not even get up until I left at 1:30 a.m.  It felt good to sit… it was a loong day.

Tell Me Again About How We Need Universal Care

The little blurb on this government web site reads:

Find A Health Center - New!
Federally-funded health centers care for you, even if you have no health insurance. You pay what you can afford based on your income. There are health centers in most cities and many rural areas.

http://www.disabilityinfo.gov/digov-public/public/DisplayPage.do?parentFolderId=148

Then there is a link where you can put in your zip code or state etc.  It will show where you can go get either ‘free’,  or based on your income, health care.  Now, given this fact, tell me again why we need universal health care.  Do we not already have it?  Seems like it to me.  I pulled up the county and there are ten places listed on page one of two.  I didn’t bother going to page two.

The Departure

The President will speak tonight.  His going away talk.  Have no clue what to expect.  Have been watching him closely the past couple of weeks.  All the pundits are saying he is trying to set his legacy.  As if “he” has any possible way of determining his legacy.  I wonder what the haters of Mr. Bush will do.  It has been total vitriol for quite a spell and as he heads home to Texas I just wonder what they will be doing.  They will have to find ‘something / somebody’ to take their hate out on;  people like this have to have something, and or some place to vent.

The next few weeks will be quite interesting.  I do wish the new President Elect well, while knowing going in I do not agree with many of the policies he espouses.  I have adapted a rather fatalistic feeling regarding the whole thing.

I have been, and yes I am, grateful for President Bush.  I disliked many things he did, mostly in the social areas, and his stand on immigration.  I do think he made the hard decisions as it pertains to Iraq.  He has had courage.  I admire that quality.

The Perks of The Rich

The perceived problem of our new Secretary of The Treasury nominee, Timothy Geithner is all bogus.  You have to know by now that people of status can indeed get away with anything.  All you really have to do is pay up and go forward.  Especially when the nation needs you, when you are ‘the’ only one who can fix things.

The failure to pay the proverbial Nanny Tax is one thing; the failure to pay self-employment taxes is quite another.  He was, in other words, a private contractor.  Having, ahem, had some experience in this matter, even little ole “I” know I have to pay taxes when acting as a private contractor.  I am not however, in the elite class and have to tow the line.

There will be nothing happen to this fellow; he will be our new Treasure Secretary and all will be rosy.  Makes me gag.

The New President

One thing I am going to be ‘very’ interested in is Afghanistan.  We have been told since we went into Iraq by the democrat party we went to the wrong place.  We should have been focusing on and in Afghanistan.  Well, now is their chance.  I know we have been told they will add up to 30,000 troops.  Two things.  I will have to see that to believe it, and two, I wonder what will happen if the going gets tough.  I shouldn’t say ‘if’… it will be tough.  I wonder if these rabid trackers of the Taliban will give the order to follow through.  I hope so.

A New Beginning

Is it just me or have all President Elects given weekly talks to the nation.  I mean…. on the one hand, Mr. Obama says we only have one President at a time, then I hear him talking to the people as if he is Da Man already.  Dunno, just a new trend I guess.  Will this be the norm in the future elections?  I for one do not recall it in the past. Just wondering.

Life’s Lessons Take Time To Reveal Themselves

The recent firestorm over Caroline saying “ya know” many times during an interview brought back lots of memories to me in relation to my oldest daughter.  She used to use those words “ya know” at the end of most ever uttered sentence.  It was to the point of being very aggravating to her father, read as ME.

Accordingly, I began saying, “not until you tell me”, in response to each and every “ya know”.  It was exasperating, it was frustrating, it was ‘I can’t stand you Dad” type stuff.  However, this last couple of weeks, what with all the new stories about poor Caroline, I thought back to those days.  I could not resist calling said daughter and reminding her of the past.  We had a good laugh, and I think she wishes Uncle Teddy or ‘someone’ had the gonads to have mentored Caroline.

Ahh memories. :)
